Kinesio Tape is a fast growing method of rehabilitation which has become more popular since the 2008 Summer Olympics where many Olympians were seen using Kinesio Tape.  Other athletes who have used Kineso Tape include Serena Williams, David Beckham, and Edgerrin James.

Kinesio taping involves taping around an injured muscle in order to provide support and prevent over-contraction of the muscle, while still allowing full range of motion. It is important for a muscle to have full range of motion while it is healing or function may be compromised once the injury has healed.  It also helps to reduce muscle fatigue by supporting the muscle.

Kinesio Tape also helps to improve circulation and lymph drainage which promotes and quickens healing.  Tape can be applied with stretch which creates space under the skin and allows for the increased circulation.

Suppression of pain is another function on Kinesio Tape. Neurologic sensory receptors located in the skin are activated when the tape is applied due to its expanding and contracting properties. The activation of these neural pathways helps reduce pain.  Increased circulation also has an effect on pain reduction.

Lastly, taping helps a patient hold their adjustments longer.  Spasms in shortened muscles are relieved by taping, which in turn allows to vertebrae to remain properly aligned.

Kinesio tape can be used for any musculoskeletal problem, from headaches to foot pain and everything in between.  It can also be used to increase the rate of bruise healing.  Kinesio Tape can be worn 24 hours a day for about 3-5 days.  You are able to shower with the tape on and continue with all of your activities as usual.  Ask us if kinesio tape is right for you!
