Approximately 25% of Americans have flat feet. This happens when the medial arch of your foot collapses causes your foot to appear flat. Ankle overpronation often times goes along with flat feet, which can cause just as many problems. Pronation is when the ankle falls inward. Both of these conditions can cause pain anywhere from your ankle to your back and hips.
Your feet are the base of your body, upon which the functions of all structures above rely.  Flat feet or ankle pronation can cause biomechanical irregularities when you walk, run or do any other activity. This causes a change in joint structure and joint function. If joints aren’t functioning properly, over time they will wear down and cause pain.
If you have flat feet or pronation it is important to get treated to help prevent or ease pain. The most common form of treatment is custom made shoe inserts. These help to maintain your arch in the proper position. There are also exercises you can do to help strengthen and stretch the arch of your foot. Also, chiropractic care can help make sure all your joints are functioning properly, in order to prevent the wear and tear and resulting pain that flat feet may cause.
